Perth’s climate is hard on external surfaces. Sustained heat, sharp temperature swings and intense UV all cause tiles and substrates to expand and contract far more than they do indoors — and an outdoor installation detailed like an indoor one will crack, lift or drum within a few seasons.

We tile alfresco areas, patios, entertaining spaces, verandahs and pool surrounds with the detailing those conditions actually require: correct falls to drainage, properly spaced movement joints, and adhesives and grouts rated for external exposure.

Slip Rating, Falls & Movement

Three things determine whether an outdoor tiled area performs. Slip rating — external and poolside surfaces need an appropriate R-rating, particularly where children and wet feet are involved. Falls — water needs somewhere to go, and it needs to get there without pooling. Movement joints — a large external field of tile must be able to expand, or it will find its own relief and crack.

We specify all three at quote stage and explain the reasoning, so you’re choosing a surface rather than just choosing a tile you liked in a showroom.

FAQs

What slip rating do I need for a pool surround? It depends on the area and how it’s used, but poolside and other barefoot wet areas need a higher rating than a covered alfresco. We’ll recommend an appropriate rating for your specific space at quote stage.

Can you tile over an existing outdoor concrete slab? Usually yes, provided the slab is sound, has adequate falls and is free of significant movement cracking. We’ll assess the substrate before quoting and tell you if remedial work is needed first.

Do outdoor areas need waterproofing? Any tiled area sitting above habitable space does — a balcony, or an alfresco over a garage. A ground-level patio on a slab generally doesn’t, but drainage still has to be right. We’ll advise based on your specific situation.
