Grout and silicone are the first things to fail in a wet area, and they’re also the cheapest things to put right. Discoloured, cracked or mouldy joints make an otherwise sound bathroom look tired — and perished silicone in the corners is exactly where water starts finding its way behind the tile.
A regrout won’t fix a failed membrane, but where the waterproofing underneath is still sound it genuinely restores the room, usually in a single day and at a fraction of the cost of replacing everything.
We check before we quote, because the honest answer isn’t always the bigger job.
A regrout is the right call when the grout is stained, cracked or crumbling, the silicone has perished or gone mouldy, but the tiles are firmly adhered and there’s no sign of water getting through.
A retile is the right call when tiles sound hollow or drummy when tapped, the floor feels soft or moves underfoot, there’s staining on the ceiling below, or paint is lifting on the far side of a shower wall. In those cases the membrane has likely failed, and regrouting would only hide the problem for a season.
We’d rather quote the repair when the repair is enough. If it isn’t, we’ll tell you that too.
We remove failed grout and silicone completely rather than skimming over the top of it, clean the joints back, and re-lay to a consistent colour and depth across the whole surface. Call 0459 074 402 for a free assessment and an honest answer on whether a regrout will do the job.
How long does regrouting take? Most standard showers and splashbacks are completed in a single day. Larger areas or jobs needing significant preparation may run into a second day — we’ll tell you at quote stage.
Will regrouting fix my leaking shower? Only if the leak is coming through the grout or silicone rather than a failed membrane underneath. We assess first and tell you honestly which one you’re dealing with, because a regrout over a failed membrane wastes your money.
Can you change the grout colour? Yes. Since we remove the old grout entirely rather than skimming over it, you can change colour completely — which is one of the cheapest ways to substantially change how a bathroom looks.
